Funeral Meals

IJRA'ĀT SALMĀ MAWLĀT RASŪLULLĀH صلى الله عليه وسلم

INTRODUCTION

Preparation of Meals for the Bereaved Family

‘Abdullāh bin Ja’far رضي الله عنه  narrates:

“When the news of Ja’far’s passing reached the Prophet , he said: ‘Prepare food for Ja’far’s family, for they will be occupied.’”
(Abū Dawūd)

This initiative continues that blessed tradition, providing meals for families during the critical first hours following the loss of a loved one.

The aim of this initiative is to support bereaved families by providing meals, easing one small but essential burden during a time of grief.

The passing of a family member brings a mix of emotions and responsibilities. Families must care for their emotional and physical needs while also managing funeral arrangements and attending to guests. During these crucial hours, Ijra’at Salmā steps in to prepare and deliver meals to the funeral home, allowing the bereaved to focus on grieving and family matters without worrying about immediate sustenance.

Inspiration

Who was Salmā رضي الله عنها?

Salmā was a freed slave of Rasūlullāh ﷺ. Alongside her husband, Abū Rāfi’ رضي الله عنه, she was deeply involved in supporting the Prophet ﷺ and his family. She assisted with pre-delivery preparations, helped Khadījah رضي الله عنها  during the deliveries of Rasūlullāh’s children, and also assisted with the birth of Ibrāhīm رضي الله عنه, the son of Rasūlullāh ﷺ and Māriyah رضي الله عنها.

Her dedication to service, care, and practical support inspires this initiative—bringing relief and comfort to grieving families in times of need.
