IJRA'ĀT ZAINAB BINT JAḤSH رضي الله عنها

INTRODUCTION

Following the unrest and incidents in July 2021 across South Africa, Madrasah ‘Urwah initiated a relief effort in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region. This marked the beginning of a dedicated wing of the Madrasah, focused on responding to communities in need.

This wing continues to provide short- and long-term relief to affected areas, supporting the welfare of communities irrespective of race, religion, or culture, with the help of generous donors and volunteers.

Key Efforts & Projects

  • KZN Relief (July 2021): Distribution of over 1,300 grocery hampers and aid to local businesses impacted by the unrest.
  • Vaalbank Informal Settlement Fires (August 2021): Provision of blankets and kitchenware to affected families.
  • Western Cape Welfare (October 2021): A team visited several regions to conduct community welfare operations.
  • Monthly Hamper Distributions
  • Ongoing support for individual beneficiaries identified in vulnerable communities

Inspiration

This project is named after Zaynab bint Jaḥash رضي الله عنها, one of the most revered women of her time, known for her piety, generosity, and devotion to Allāh Ta’ālā.

The Prophet ﷺ often praised her for her charitable spending in the path of Allāh. Āʿishah رضي الله عنها described her virtues:

“I have never seen a woman more superior in religion, more Allāh-fearing, more truthful, more conscious of maintaining family relations, more generous, and more self-sacrificing in practical life than Zaynab, with a charitable disposition that draws one closer to Allāh.”

In her honour, this wing continues the spirit of compassion, generosity, and community service.
